Red Dress Challenge

This week’s challenge is on telling the truth (did you see this one coming?). What truth do you want or need to tell in your life right now? Who do you need to tell? By simply writing down this truth or speaking it aloud, what shifts in you?

Why Not Wednesdays :: Pay it Forward

Posted Wednesday, August 04, 2010 at 09:35am | No comments

Here at Red Dress Studios, we are all about taking risks (so that you can build bodacious confidence muscles!). That is why every Wednesday I ask readers, “Why not?” do something daring, creative, and unconventional.

This month’s WNW Theme is Money. Taking risks with your money may seem irresponsible. Trust me, your confidence in the ability to earn (and then know what to do with those earnings) will skyrocket the more you step outside your comfort zone.

9/100 generosity by Etsy Shop corid

Even when we feel that we have no money to spare, generosity breeds feelings of abundance.

So this week, find a way to give back to others in need.

Find a way to align your gift with your values.

If you’re passionate about building local community, send a $10 donation to a community organization doing great work.

If you know first-hand that business ownership is a path of empowerment for women, consider making a small micro-loan to another woman entrepreneur around the world. (Kiva can help you out with this.)

If you’ve been profitable for some time, consider becoming an angel investor and helping another woman start a business, in whatever ways work for you.

And if you currently have zero dollars to spare, consider building generosity straight into your business plan. Here at Red Dress Studios, a portion of every Red Dress Session goes straight to charity.

Remember that feelings of scarcity replicate like crazy, but so too do feelings of abundance, gratitude, and plenty, no matter what your bank account balance says.

Challenging your self-care habits

Posted Monday, August 02, 2010 at 10:42am | 2 comments

Have you ever had the experience of doing something that you thought was self-care…only afterward you didn’t feel cared for at all?

Today I’m talking about this phenomenon, my own experience with it, and what you can do to ensure that self-care actually has a positive benefit for you.

*********************************************

You’ll notice some changes to my services page. The Red Dress Session now starts at $150, with an option to upgrade for some super cool benefits. The Bluestocking Sessions are now sold in packages of 3 sessions for $400 (a $50 discount). Questions? Feel free to send me a note.

Why Not Wednesdays :: Go On a Blind Date

Posted Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at 09:32am | No comments

Here at Red Dress Studios, we are all about taking risks (so that you can build bodacious confidence muscles!). That is why every Wednesday I ask readers, “Why not?” do something daring, creative, and unconventional.

This month’s WNW theme is Relationships. Taking risks in or with relationships is scary, especially for women, because it is often the place we find meaning, fulfillment, and comfort. But surrounding yourself with supportive relationships is fundamental to business and personal growth, and risk taking can help you be more honest, more present, and more active in them.

Taking a chance on a new relationship or friendship is always a bit scary.

If it’s a first meeting over tea or a full dinner and a movie, dates sometimes feel like an opportunity for awkwardness, self-consciousness and even rejection to come in. Who wants that?

But remember that even your dearest friend was once a stranger to you. What would have been lost if you’d said no to that first meeting?

So set a blind date with someone who intrigues you, either a potential future love interest or a hoped-for new friend.

Afterwards, check in.

Did you learn anything surprising about yourself?

How did you feel when you were talking with this new person?

How did your body respond: were there sparkles of a match or mixed signals?

Red Dress Conversations #29 | The Magic of Raw Foods

This week’s guest: Nathalie Lussier of Raw Foods Witch

Website: http://rawfoodswitch.com

Twitter: http://twitter.com/NathLussier

Upcoming Courses: Her Magick Menu course will start up again this fall

About Nathalie

Nathalie Lussier calls herself the Raw Foods Witch because she brings a different approach to raw foods (call it her own little spark of magick). Raw food has been a transformational tool in her life: it got her from being addicted to junk food and meat to loving vegetables and rocking the kitchen. Her philosophy is that you should eat as much raw food as you want, and call yourself what you want, as long as you’re feeling great! The Raw Foods Witch web site is all about taking a holistic approach to healing yourself and your relationship to food. Nathalie currently lives in Toronto, Canada.

Red Dress Challenge

Try out eating raw foods for yourself! Start with eating raw food for one meal, for one day, or for one whole week if you’re ambitious! Share your experience with eating raw in the comments.

It IS feminist to want to make money

Posted Friday, July 23, 2010 at 09:26am | No comments

There’s this undercurrent in the feminist movement that money is evil.

(This might be more second than third wave, but its still there.)

It’s like the most noble forms of feminism require that you live on poverty level.

Why that idea is bullshit

This does not serve our movement well. Money is not evil.

Feminist benefactors know this inherently. It’s what you do with the money that matters.

Furthermore, the more we talk about how noble it is to work for free (or close to it), the more we’re cutting off our own legs.

We have a mountain of student loans, credit card debt, and no savings for retirement–but “hey, we’ve been working for a cause!”

What is happening as a result

Many third wavers are waking up and realizing that they don’t want to work for next to nothing at nonprofits anymore.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) that means that many are leaving the work they care about and the organization’s that have benefited from their brilliant ideas.

There is no right or wrong way. I’m a fervent advocate of recognizing what’s best for you, in this moment.

Its just that…well…there’s another way.

The abundant, CYA^ way

I want to challenge the trend that feminist activism must be done for free.

You are worth more. Claim your worth.

Help to build your organization’s capacity and the idea among your own circle that you charge for your time.^^

Stop giving it away for free.

People will pay for what they value.

Food for thought

What has been your experience as a feminist working in the movement? How have your career or business choices been dictated by money?

^For those of you that don’t curse, CYA = cover your ass.
^^Note: I’m not against volunteer work. Volunteering is important and helps you feel connected to your community. Keep volunteering—in moderation.

Oh my! That’s right, I’m talking about sex toy shops.

Check out one of the fabulous online woman-friendly sex toy shops whose mission is to support women’s sexual empowerment.

A couple suggestions: Babeland in New York City and Seattle or Good Vibrations in San Francisco, Berkeley, and Brookline, Massachusetts.

Invite your partner to peruse the websites with you and choose one new toy or create a wishlist together.

If your focus right now is on relationship building with yourself, remember that perusing or purchasing new toys for your collection is a great way of learning more about your body and what you like.

The one thing we know for sure

Posted Monday, July 19, 2010 at 09:56am | No comments

What We Think We Become print from Etsy shop Sunny Champagne

The idea that the only thing we know for sure is that things will change is a Buddhist teaching that I’ve been digging lately.

It gives you hope if you’re at rock bottom and wanting to live your dream life.

It helps temper the ego if you’re on top of the world and have achieved your dreams.

In addition to witnessing this as a truth in my own life, it has also given me a unique outlook on my business.

It has reminded me not to get too wrapped up in the way things have been.

Every moment is a chance to change direction. To pursue an idea for a new product. To reach out to a new client.

We are constantly creating our realities, every single second.

This reminds me that I’m alive, that this is my one precious life, and that this business of mine has unlimited potential.

Food for thought

Does this teaching resonate with you? Have you experienced this in your life or business?
